They have been accumulating in my head for quite some time now. The past week or two have been very eventful for me at least, which has been keeping me away from the realm of music for a bit. Its crazy how life goes. One week i will be immersed in music and another, ill be completely torn away from it.

Anyway lets get started.

The new Brand New album "The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me" has been out for a week and let me tell you, it is definitely worth the 13 or so dollars at your local record store. Ive listened to it too many times to count but that is what I usually do to get a feel for the album. most tracks on the album are solid. You can tell that Jesse Lacey has done a lot of maturing since "Deja." The music aspect of it kicks ass, you get a feeling that "Your Favorite Weapon" and "Deja" mated, and this was the product. Going into this album I had expected something more along the lines of something more epic. I love this album to death, I just don't think it was worth the 4 year wait.

I plan on starting something every Tuesday, that's along the lines of "Whats new?" I promise it wont have that bad of a name, I'm the king of title making. It will be a summary of the 5 albums that I add on the CMJ charts for each week. It will give those looking for new music a chance to see whats out there and get something new to listen to.

I had originally intended this post to be more of a post with news but i cant stop myself from mentioning my actions of last week.

For those who do not know, I was in the 80th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. I was on the Build-A-Bear Workshop Float shaking my bear tail as Bearemy the BABW mascot. I got to share the float with pop sensation "Hannah Montana" aka Miley Cyrus aka Billy Ray Cyrus's daughter (yes "Achey Brakey Heart" Billy Ray Cyrus). I never realized how many people were Hannah Montana crazy. The parade was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I also got to share a bus with Ciara (of "1,2 step" fame) and she is absolutely stunning in person.

Anyway, I'm actually pressed for time I need to run to Spanish class but I'm back and full of fun stuff.

In the meantime, if you need something to listen to today, check out the new ep out by The Rocket Summer titled "Early Days." Also I've been listening to Forward, Russia! more and more, its good stuff.

I'm out like a light,
Jimi

Vinny Testaverde is the NFL's Barbara Streisand

How can I make a comparison like that? They both just don't know when to give up. So i'm sitting in psych class, just finished a test, and i picked up the New York Times' sports section. I flip through the pages to get to the NFL section when I see a sentence that sofar has been uttered in every article in every paper regarding this topic.
Vinny Testaverde, who came out of retirement last season to help out the New York Jets, was signed on Tuesday by New England.

Questions for two people.

First one, for Vinny. Why? I think New Yorkers remember hearing something about "never playing for another team other then the Jets" when his father died. Also I think we remember hearing "I'm helping the jets because I want to, not because they asked me to"

Second question, for Bill Belichick (head coach for the Patriots). Why? Vinny is a shell of his former self, his stats for last season show that. Lets review his numbers.

For passing:
GP - 6
Comp - 60
Att - 106
Pct - 56.6
Yds - 777
TD - 1
INT - 6

Rushing:
Att - 7
Yds - 4
TD - 2

Not the worst of his career, but certainly nowhere near the best.

He's a fossil now. If the Patriots defense is letting Brady get manhandled, whats to say Vinny won't get the same beating? They are just asking to have another potentially injured QB.

Well im done ranting, I think the fumes have settled. Maybe i'm just a angry New Yorker, maybe i'm ranting because I feel betrayed, but nothing good can come of this. I hope he plays soon so when the Patriots lose, ill feel good about myself.

Another Pop.Is.Dead post.....is in the can.
Jimi

Teleprompters are all the rage nowadays.

Ill start off with this picture.

Yup. Axl Rose, with a teleprompter. Now axl using it is not news to any of us. He has been using one since Guns and Roses was in its heyday but it seems that this trend has caught on.

One would think that when you write a song, it would hold some sentimental value, and you would like to remember it. Even when you perform it time and time again @ 100+ shows, you would think that it would stick in your head. In Axl's defense, im sure that the years of drug and alcohol abuse has done a number on his brain cells.

So want a list of people who use teleprompters? Sure ill tell you.

The Boss - Bruce Springstein
Jay Z
Panic At The Disco ( it was reported that teleprompters are being used on their headlining tour and they are being disguised as monitors.)
Nickelback (although who really cares, they arent entertaining)
Third Eye Blind
Black Sabbath
Justin Timberlake
Bjork
Depeche Mode
Britney Spears
Beyonce
Mariah Carey
Blink 182

The list goes on but it is pretty much anyone who has put on a big tour with lots of flashy things going on the background.

Well anyway, ill end on one more thing.

Go buy that. The man that conquered the world of pop, then dropped off the face of the earth, is back performing! Wacko Jacko, the King of Pop, the cute one from the Jackson 5, or whatever he is going by these days will be showing his "face" again. We havent seen MJ since his child molestation charges. He vacated to Europe and has been spending a large portion of his time either a. molesting children in Europe or b. working on a new album. Im pulling for the later of the two. Anyway, he will be preforming at the World Music Awards (which are being hosted by everyone's favorite Long Island floozy that got rich Lindsay Lohan). (CMJ) A festival of music and other things.

Well its officially one week since the beginning of the College Music Journal(CMJ) Festival and it seems like just yesterday when I went to go pick up my badge. So let's go day by day and see what exactly I did and lets see what I remember.

Tuesday. 10 am, I met Emma at the Chambers Street stop in Manhattan and we took the 1 train up to Lincoln center to start what would be a week full of fun and excitement. While on the train there was a homeless man with an eyepatch singing to us. It was a awkward time for us all. If there's one thing you learn while at CMJ, it's that you get a TON of crap. Emma and I were handed our red bag full of CMJ swag and none of it was useful. We sat outside by the fountain in the center of Lincoln center and started to plan our week. A few hours go by, I run back to Pace, take a Spanish test, and then go to my first CMJ panel. It was about merchandising your band/company. It was at that panel that I realized that, I'm a minority. There were TONS of people from all over the united states and they all had funny accents. More time passes and its finally night time. Emma and I had decided to meet up again and go to some shows that night. We met up with Doug, Bethany and Brooke from Pirate and sat down at a restaurant and had a bite to eat. While eating we were the worst of human beings by making fun of every person that walked by in a costume. It was a wonderful time. So after all that, we went to the knitting factory to catch The Format. I'm not a huge fan of The Format but this show made me a bigger fan of them. They put on a good show even if the singer looked completely wasted. After the format played, Emma, Brooke and I went out whet our palates before trying to catch another show. Brooke left us and Emma and I were on our way to Webster hall to catch the rapture. Little did we know at the time that the rapture was not playing at Webster hall and was playing at the Bowery ballroom. So we decided to hoof it through the Halloween traffic and make it down the Bowery ballroom where we were faced with a pretty long line. We also had to pee, real bad, so this line wasn't cutting it for us. While on line we met a group of guys from Virginia. (little did we know that we would see these guys EVERYWHERE!) So we finally got into the rapture show and we had some awesome spots and rocked out real hard. The Rapture was the best show I went to all week by far. After that, Emma and myself met up with Brooke and Justin from Fanatic. Justin was with two very tall men whose names escape me right now, but we met them at St. Marcs place in the city at some crazy Asian place called Bam! That served fast food through a vending machine type thing. That alone was nuts. While there, a "classy" British gentleman in drag started to talk to Emma and Emma managed to make him get the most disgusting thing at Bam!. He was crazy, drunk, and well extremely entertaining. The night ended fairly late, and I got little sleep because Wednesday started so soon.

Wednesday. The Pirate party started the day off in a very elaborate fashion. It was held at arlenes grocery and started at 12ish. There was tons of stuff going on and a ton of good bands playing, Mason Proper and The Matches being the highlights. Pirate also found some crazy tarot card reader who told me id be coming into massive amounts of money. Now its just the waiting game until I get this money. Emma and I were also introduced to FOOSH mints. Now what is a Foosh mint? It is a energy candy, that is equal to 1/2 a No-Doz Pill and 1.5 cans of Red Bull. Needless to say, Emma and I got hooked and were popping these mints the entire rest of the week. Oh we ran into the Virginia boys again and I met one of the coolest girls ever. Jenn from Fanatic, here is your shout out! When the Pirate party was all said and done, it was time to eat. We walked about a block down Stanton to San Loco. A classy Mexican establishment if I must say so myself. We were quite the entourage. It was Emma, Brooke, Jerry and Jesse from Vitriol, Zack from Mason Proper, one guy from some radio station in the middle of nowhere, and somebody else. (I apologize to someone else who ever you are). The story I am about to tell was one of the main highlights of my week. Jesse from Vitriol had a little cup of chipolte sauce, and dared Zack to drink it all for five dollars. Zack being pretty intoxicated from the day obliged to this dare and started to drink the sauce. The facial expressions on this mans face were priceless. I of course being the instigator I am, tried to get Zack to puke but to no avail did he puke. We were laughing so hard that I may have damaged some of my insides, but zack did it and managed to keep it in him. The only thing I could do at that point was wish him good luck for when it passes, because speaking from experience, spicy things do not come out the other end with ease and without pain. After that, I was pretty much stuck to do nothing else. Everywhere I wanted to go was carding and 21+ which stunk big time. Especially because I wanted to see Hello Stranger and Shout Out Out Out Out. So that night ended fairly early for me, which is okay because I needed the sleep.

Thursday. Thursday was COLLEGE DAY. A day with good intent but no real, substance. The day started at 9 with breakfast, and loud noise. Emma and I were not having the loud noise so we went to Duane reade so she could get vitamin water then we attended some panels went to the Music Directors summit which was just a bunch of people sitting on a panel spewing bullshit from their mouths. Some good ideas came out of it though regarding storing and keeping CD's in the station. Apparently I was very cynical according to Emma. Then Emma and I got some lunch, I picked up the charger for my camera and then Heather met up with us. Heather was on a panel and hogged all the spotlight and everyone in the audience felt like they could relate with her because of our small but strong station. It was cute and heather made us look AWESOME. Then I had to run back to pace and take a midterm that took all of a half hour but was stuck in the class room for 2.5. (I got a 90 on the midterm by the way) I then met up with Emma and we were on our way to some sweet shows. I got to see Action Action at the Bowery Poetry Club. While there I saw two guys from Men Women and Children which was pretty sweet. During the show apparently Emma and Heather were being bought drinks from some Asian guy who made a ton of money and had the hots for them. Emma and I left heather with her friend and the drunk guy and we went home.

Friday. Friday was try to catch up on sleep day. The first thing I did was go with Heather and Emma at around 4ish to Mo Pitkins on Ave A for the Fanatic showcase where I met up with jenn again and we had a wonderful time chit chatting it up. After the Fanatic showcase Heather, Emma and I wandered around while waiting for a call from Brooke about what we were doing that night. We ended up losing heather to her cellphone so Emma and I went to starbucks for a little while and talked to the people waiting on line who needed to use the little boys and girls room. It was during this time I came up with the bright idea to make my threadless t shirt into a bandanna. It was pretty sick, I looked like the karate kid. So later we ended up going to Veselka's. It was a cute polish place and we met up with Brooke, Doug, bethany, and abby. It was fun, then Emma and I, revisited the bowery ball room to see Annuals and Mew. Both put on solid shows although I think the druggies liked Mew a bit more because I think that's the only way you could understand what was going on, on the screen behind mew. Many a exciting picture was taken that night and as soon as I get all the pictures uploaded to iphoto and then I web, you will see them all! Friday came and went, most of it was a blur that led into Saturday.

Saturday. The day I was looking forward to the most was the shortest of all the days. In short, it was the AAM party in Brooklyn at NorthSix. I wanted to see Dan Sartain, he wasn't there. I was sad. I stayed for a soy dog with mustard, then left. That was the extent of my Saturday. Hurrah.

I figure ill leave the end of this whole long blog post to shoutouts.

Emma - thank you so much for letting me tag along and meeting everybody and showing me the ins and outs of CMJ life. It was a blast. <3

Heather - I think you were the one to keep me the most sane, and special. You laughed at all my lame jokes like "man flares" and things of that sort.

Brooke - Im not racist. We had our moments during mew making fun of the lead singer. it was a good time. Now we can be best friends forever.

Doug - you probably wont remember any of the moments we had together because you are too popular. But thats okay. Ill remember them for us. ;)

Justin - You are nuts. Ill leave it at that. We think on the same brain wave at times and its perfect.

Jenn - Oh the tension ;)

Jesse - That was a $5 bill well spent.

And if i forgot anybody else, just yell at me.

Well I hope you enjoyed my recap of CMJ. it was definately a experience.

Catch you all on the flipside.
Jimi

PS. Thursday is WPUB and Music For America's benefit concert held in the student union of Pace University. Its free admission and cool bands are playing. You should show up.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://popisdeadwpub.blogspot.com/2006/11/cee-em-jay-cmj-festival-of-music-and.html' title='Cee Em Jay. Its been nuts, ive been meeting the promoters that were only a voice on the telephone a week ago, ive been hanging out with band people (like someone from mason proper who jesse from Vitriol paid 5 dollars to drink chipolte sauce...pictures will be up soon), and its just been a all around crazy week sofar. Im going to post a huge post detailing each day and what i did, if i can remember them haha. I was pretty impressed.

3 of the 5 bands were NY natives and they let it be known. The first band to perform was Men Women and Children (MWC) and it was a pretty good set considering all their stuff got stolen a few days before in Detroit. The doors to the Roseland Ballroom were supposed to open at 615 but didn't open until 645. The line to the ballroom was no joke up a 1/4 of 53rd, around the corner to 54th, and down to the end of 54th street. That was a line I was not going to wait on. So knowing how the lines work at the ballroom, me and my cohorts decided to just jump in line and see what happens. Lo and behold we got in fairly quick but to our amazement, MWC was pretty much about ready to play. Like I said before their set was awesome considering the circumstances but the set was cut short due to them being the opening band, a delayed sound test, and well, MTV being unpleasant. They did their normal song and dance and their hometown appreciated it.

Next up were the Pink Spiders from Tennessee. They sucked, nobody cared. They didn't give their crowd love, they just played and left.

Moving on.

Gabe Saporta is my new hero. For those who don't know who he is, he is the lead singer of Cobra Starship, ex lead singer of Midtown, dance extraordinaire, and well, NY native. Now going into this show I had listened to the Cobra Starship album twice, not really digging it only because I had been such a huge fan of their hit song "Bring It" and thought the rest of the album would be just as upbeat. I just want to say that since the show I have listened to the album at least 7 times a day. Gabe puts in a tremendous effort in trying to put on a good show for his hometown fans. The Cobra Starship set was electric and got everybody moving after the pain that the fans had to sit through the act before. Not to mention Gabe is also one of the coolest guys I've seen in a while. He was by the merch table doing the routine meet and greet with the fans and didn't look disinterested or unhappy. He loves the fans, and we love him. The next set on the list was my real reason for going to this show.

Daryl Palumbo and Head Automatica(also NY natives) were by far the best part of the whole show. I've only seen Head Automatica play once before but I have seen Daryl many times before during his Glassjaw stint. Their set list was a perfect blend of their new album "Popaganda" and their debut album, "Decadence". They played all the fan favorites including "Beating Hearts Baby" and "Graduation Day" They got the crowd all riled up, excited and ready to go out and party afterwards. It was perfect, just perfect and everything I expected and then some.

After that I got ditched by my 2 cohorts who said they were going to the bathroom but instead went to go be teenies and stare at Gabe. But while that was going on, 30 Seconds to Mars had their intro. This intro was killer. It was entertaining and built up a ton of suspense before they played their first song. Now let me just say something for one sec (not that I'm already not, but hey I'm trying to be professional) I'm not the worlds biggest 30 seconds to mars fan because really, how can I take Jared Leto seriously? This band is pretty much a boy band that plays guitar. Also, lets talk about their fanbase. How does a band who has a pretty heavy undertone to their music have such a young fanbase. I mean I really didn't expect to bump into a bunch of mommies and daddies at the show. It was just wired.

Anyway ill tie this up. Go listen to MWC, Cobra Starship, and Head Automatica. Go see them if they are coming to a city near you, it will be worth the money.

So sit back and enjoy the view.
Jimi

My Chemical Romance....Not quite FDA approved.

So the illustrious band that everyone is fawning over again, My Chemical Romance, put on a show last night at Webster Hall. A show that normally, would be sold out with teenage girls and boys crying outside the venue because they cant have a chance to glance over at the MCR front-man Gerard Way, was in fact empty. Shows at Webster Hall with big names are always packed. Webster Hall shows also fall into that "sardine in a can" mentality but not this show. How does a band like My Chemical Romance with the fanbase it supposedly has in the biggest city of them all, that's not even too far from their hometown in New Jersey, not sell out. Last nights show started out as a 18+ show which is generally the norm at that venue but in a last ditch effort from the people at Webster Hall, emails were sent out to everyone on their mailing list saying that the show was now 16+. To no avail did Webster Hall get the response they were wishing for.

For those reading this thinking "Oh damn I could of went to that show" lets get real for a second. It was a Tuesday night. Who does shows on Tuesday nights. All the college kids were probably doing last minute papers and the teens couldn't get out to NYC on a school night.

And lastly, for those wondering. The show wasn't so great. They played 5 new tracks off "The Black Parade" and 3 from "Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge".

Gerard Way has been compared to Freddie Mercury in recent news. Had you asked me what I thought about this comment being the raging Queen fan that I am, I would of agreed with you. On "The Black Parade" Gerard and Co. Put together a masterpiece that has many Queen under/overtones in it. Gerard also shares the unique vocal range that Freddie had, however last night's show was depressing. Gerard wasn't his normal self on stage. He normally has a amazing stage presence and like Freddie, can control crowds. Maybe the small turnout was discouraging and this wont happen again, but man, what a way to start off "The Black Parade".

On a side note. CMJ is next week, and I'm super excited.

Loving you always,
Jimi

As Tall As Lions. Ever since I first saw them 5 years ago at The Downtown on Long Island, I've been obsessed. Their lead singer and the band as a whole puts on a incredible show full of emotion and energy. Ive even created a word to describe their sound. Their sound is a purely sexual experience for the ears, an "audiorgasm." So in wanting to review their album I wasn't put at a loss for words, just, wanted to give them justice.

People ask me all the time, you love As Tall As Lions so much, what do they sound like? And anyone who knows me knows im the worst at 2 things. 1. Retelling a story, and 2. saying what a band sound likes. However, a friend of mine at absolutepunk.net fowared this to me and it is dead on. Their review reads:

As Tall As Lions can soar like U2, groove like Days Away, get as technical as Gatsby’s American Dream, rock out like Brand New, experiment like The Mars Volta, and even emote like Damien Rice. Seamlessly streamlining these qualities, the band has turned out a surprisingly adult, grown-up, complete, hypnotic, entrancing, brave, and layered sophomore effort with lasting appeal to boot. I’m just about out of adjectives, but please don’t miss one of the best that 2006 has to offer. It requires more than a single listen to truly consume and digest the songwriting which at first might seem to blend, but all efforts will be handsomely rewarded, and soon each track becomes distinct.

There it is my friends. Hopefully ill be able to get a interview with them when they are in town so I will have more ATAL love for you guys.

Well its time for class, again.

So won't you please, be my neighbor?

Jimi

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://popisdeadwpub.blogspot.com/2006/10/as-tall-as-lions-musical-love-child-of.html' title='As Tall As Lions. Im making the club cards, so you guys better take one and show up.

WPUB is eating my soul and I love it.

Lately i've been contacting a whole bunch of localish (when i say local i mean tri state area) and been networking. Getting to know the bands that are out there and seeing what the new east coast sound, sounds like. Also, I am swapping promotion. I play their music, announce their shows, and they promote the Pop.Is.Dead brand. Its super kosher and a ton of fun. sofar I have a list of 10 or so bands that are on board and itll be just one big happy musical family, making tons of musical children.

Pop.Is.Dead is on tomorrow, but you knew that. Got a pretty cool show in store for you. Playing a lot of the locals stuff hopefully if I get the cds in, in time. Someone on the 8th floor at 41 park row is eating my wpub mail. For instance, I have a friend, his name is Justin and he works for a promotions company called Fanatic. He sends me great music, and this monday, i got nothing from him. Someone in the mail room will pay for this. I will find the person eating my cds. Anyway I ramble.

Yup its time to do that whole third world class thing again. maybe ill get tawny to ramble on sometime on this thing. I mean considering she is my co-host and all.

she prob doesnt even know that this exists. lets hope so.

Well, until next time, this is Jimi saying, "Stay classy san-diego".

Hello Stranger, Moneen, and other random acts of kindness

So if I could give you one guess on where I am, where would you guess? Yup, the ever so faithful computer lab here at Pace University.

So anyway on to more relevant news. Two days ago I got to interview this awesome band, Hello Stranger. They came in to the WPUB studio and we had a grand old time. I asked them the age old question "Is Pop dead?" and we got into this whole big debate on the definition of "pop." It was fantastic and im going to try to get them to come to the show next time they are in town. So check them out their website is www.hellostranger.tv or their myspace www.myspace.com/hellostrangermusic .

In other news, I got to see a band that I happen to wake up to every morning when my ipod goes off. Moneen. In what I thought was a mediocre turn out at the knitting factory was actually a big turnout for them said the bassist of the band. I got the moneen album last year in the studio and when i put it in the player i was like. Woah these guys are good. I was under the impression that they were bigger then they really are in reality. Anyway I ramble. They put on an awesome show the other night and kudos to that. A lot of bands now try to play the same show at every city they go to and moneen tried to make it personal with the NYC crowd.

Justin Hawkins, here is your memorial spot on my blog. Your spot in The Darkness can never be replaced. ( for those who dont know, Justin left the band due to a cocaine addiction.)

So I totally had more planned for this post but I guess I didnt because I am having a major brain fart right now. Im thinking i really dont want to go to my third world class but if my history professor wasnt so damn funny in a old man kind of way, i wouldnt.

OH OH i know what i wanted to say!

Few cds/bands to check out and stay away from for those thursting for new music.

Stay away from the Cobra Starship. Fans of their hit "snakes on a plane" will be dissapointed with their album. There isnt the "oomph" that snakes on a plane had throughout the album. Id give it one listen, just to make sure you dont like it.

The killers album. Check it out only because, everyone in the world is checking it out. My honest opinion about it? Only 3 real singles. Like the old album. Everything else sounds like the same musical crap that mainstream bands are putting out.

Senses Fail album. Check that out. It is awesome. They totally reinvented themselves again while keeping some old senses fail in the music. Its very, new avenged sevenfold. The guitar solos will rip your face off they are that good.

Umm another brainfart.

Oh dan sartain. Check him out hes sooooo good.

Also for those who are unaware. The Nightmare Before X-Mas is coming out again later this month. This time in 3-D!!!!!! Holla! But yeah check out their myspace, they have new songs up. Well, old songs, new artists. This soundtrack will kick serious ass. www.myspace.com/nightmare3d for a good time.

Well thats it for now. Ive gotta get to class and i need to stop watching the girl next to me blantaly plagerize for her spanish paper. Its funny.

Well, from russia with love,
Jimi

One show down, a bunch more to go.

Oh how I find myself sitting within these walls, surrounded by computers, watching people type last minute papers, check myspaces/facebooks, talk on aim yet again. Last night ill admit was very unorganized (figures...first show isnt organized) but next week and from here on out itll be fun and organized. Anyway, ive got class in like 15 minutes and if i dont leave now ill never catch the elevator. Well, this semester/year, IT WILL BE DIFFERENT. I've taken on the role of College Rock Director here at WPUB and im going to help make this station the station it should be. Listened to by all. I really do plan on doing a lot this semester with the station so hopefully itll be better then what we had last year. Ill be flying solo this semester. My partner in crime Ariella Angert has flown the coop to bigger and better things (also known as Nassau Community College). She will be in the studio in spirit, and maybe in person sometimes if she decides to visit. So anyway I digress, back to POP.IS.DEAD being the best college radio show in the world. So yeah, it will be. I promise, to you my loyal fans, to give you the best damn show, blog, myspace that you have ever seen.

Love always,
Jimi

It's here. What do I think about it? Eh, I am very indifferent to it. Ocean avenue and everything before was gold, but this new album just doesn't do it for me. To me the hits aren't there and it just seems like Ryan's voice has lost its charm and Sean Mackin's talent goes unnoticed throughout the album.

I listened to the album 3 times before writing this and I've also gone around over the beautiful world wide web to see what others thought as well.

DISCLAIMER: If you are a huge Yellowcard mark and love everything about them and hate people who will be honest about your most perfect band in the world, please don't send me hate mail.

It has been a while since we've really heard from the band. In 2004 they re-released their very first album without Ryan as vocals and everyone thought it was HORRIBLE. Well of course it would be, it was the bands first album, they were getting their feet wet. Everyone thought it was new stuff and was hoping that Lights + Sounds (L+S) would save the band from the horror. Now do not get me wrong, I am a huge fan of everything Yellowcard has done, but like I stated above, this album is just stale. The sound is different, it will not be what everyone is expecting. They went for a harder sound, and got lost in it. I am officially done with Ryan's voice, I will leave it with one comment. It does not have emotion in it on this album.

The lyrics just seem like they were fished out of Ryan's toilet the day before recording. They are VERY cheesy and of course I have to use the "E" word. Yes. Emo. Even the harmonizing isn't all that great, its basic. There are good tracks on the album. I think “Sure Thing Falling” is hard charging and overwhelmingly hooky, which plays to its advantage. I enjoy the brief interlude from violinist extraordinaire Sean Mackin late in the song as well, which adds some depth to this catchy piece of music. Characterized by a throaty bass line and simple yet well-written guitar riffs, "Sure Thing Falling" will hits your listeners hardest with the infectious lyrics, which are probably the best on the album.

Now what is a album from this genre without a war song. "Two weeks from Twenty" would of been perfect, but of course there is Ryan's voice screwing it up. A song like this deserves emotion. It seems like he wrote this song because he felt he had to, because of course every album needs a war song. With that said, the horns and instrumental bridges leave your ears wanting more.

Back when I first heard of Yellowcard, the violin caught me. I played the violin back in the day and what Sean Mackin does in "Waiting Game" is what I could only dream of doing. He did all the strings by himself. I keep trying not to rip on Ryan's vocals, but its the weak point of the song.

Well, Yellowcard dropped the "punk" tag from their repertoire. Sounds like a good idea at first, but isn't that what made them big? Shouldn't bite the hand that feeds. I have a feeling that aside from one or two songs on the album the rest of the singles will not make it onto the top 40. People are used to hearing rough violin hooks and not something so orchestral. The traditional Yellowcard sound has been altered. Ryan Key comes up stale in too many places for this album. The songwriting just could be so much better. The instrumentals were perfect but the lyrics feel flat. I won’t stop enjoying their music, but this album was a severe letdown for me.

Not every album a band comes out with is perfect, and sometimes a letdown is needed to see what went wrong, to reflect. 9 out of 10 times, one bad album precedes one that is incredible. If I have to wait another three years for a new Yellowcard album, so be it, just please let it be awesome.

This is Jimi signing off.
First broadcast is tomorrow January 25th from 8-9 pm at www.wpub.org .
Hope to see you there

Ladies and Gentlemen, it's finally here!
